Spasski Trail Analysis

Hoonah, AK
Rugged terrain understood through data

The Spasski Trail Analysis sets the stage for the reconstruction of a historic trail in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest. The project will build approximately 1.75 miles of new trail through rugged temperate rainforest, providing access to recreational opportunities for residents and tourists in an area with limited amenities and expanding demand, brought on, in part, by expanded cruise port capacity. Knot Studio’s approach included remotely sensed GIS data and on-the-ground site evaluation to produce a preferred route alignment – including a discussion of feasibility and rough cost estimates. The design team incorporated variables such as slope, soil suitability, land cover, viewsheds, and construction cost to help identify routes most suitable to meet clients’ needs for a trail that transitions through diverse ecosystems and topography.
