Leach Botanical Garden Improvements

Portland, OR

Knot Studio served as a consultant for the expansion of a City of Portland historic botanical garden, providing QA/QC reviews of the site’s construction documents, expertise in designing irrigation systems, and Phase 1 construction administration services. Led by Land Morphology, Phase 1 implementation of the Master Plan has multiple site improvements, including new thematic gardens, buildings, an aerial forested tree walk, and event space. The project’s signature piece is the aerial walk allowing access into the soaring forest canopy. The tree walk’s complex design and construction include geotechnical and construction access challenges.

The establishment of diverse gardens and restoration of native plant communities is facilitated by Knot Studio’s irrigation design expertise, assuring ideal growing conditions and efficient management of water costs. High-relief topography complicates the effort with challenging conditions for revegetation efforts. Knot Studio was separately contracted to coordinate the design of an irrigation booster pump system to compensate for a shortfall in available water pressure.
